Sounday 09 Rocked!

I got to spend yesterday soaking up the sun while listening to some great kiwi and international music at Sounday. You couldn’t have asked for a better day, with not a cloud in the sky. Thankfully Hagley Park supplied a lot of shaded areas for the public to relax in.

The first highlight of the day came from Nathan Haines. This man was amazing, playing some incredible flute and sax tracks. Providing a great start as the crowds started to pour in and make themselves comfortable. And comfortable they were, brings their own chairs, beanbags, umbrellas and tents.

After Nathan Haines, the crowd was introduced to DJ Vadim and Yarah Bravo. This international hip hop duo got the crowd amped by starting their set with a tribute song to Barack Obama. “Ladies and Gentlemen the President of the United States of America Barack Obama bama bama bama bama bama!” They continued to impress the crowds with their mean beats, pulling most of the crowd to their feet.

By the time Fat Freddy’s Drop hit the stage, the crowed was pumping. They played for at least 2 hours, inviting the other musicians to sing a long with them on stage. It was a magnificent performance, and a perfect way to send your Saturday afternoon.

Once Fat Freddy’s had left the stage about half the punters started to make their way home. Big mistake, Cut Off Your Hands took the stage and blew up. These guys put own an awesome show performing songs from all of their albums, even ones from back in the day when they were know as Shaky Hands. The main vocalist was going all out, stage diving into the crowd multiple times, much to the annoyance of security guards. He also managed to break a drum stick while beating away to one song. Cut Off Your Hands were my personal favourite of the day. They left the crowd on a huge high.

[...] On Stage with Cut Off Your Hands at Sounday 09I got me some media passes to Sounday last Saturday. It was awesome. Beautiful day, sitting backstage drinking free beer while listening to some great music. Couldn’t really ask for better. Got the chance to get some pretty good photos as well.
